This list covers a day of whitetail hunting, from the tag in your pocket to the drag rope. It works for bow season and gun season. Skip the groups that don’t fit your hunt, and check off the rest the night before.

01Licenses and paperwork

Hunting licenseKeep it on you, not in the truck. Many states accept a digital copy on your phone.

02Clothing and layers

03Bow or rifle gear

What people forget

Nobody leaves the rifle at home. It’s the small stuff that ruins a morning, and it’s usually one of these.

The tag or license. Keep them in the jacket you always hunt in, or in a zip bag clipped inside your pack.
A knife that’s actually sharp. Test it on paper before the season. A dull knife makes field dressing slow and messy.
Headlamp batteries. Put fresh ones in before opening day, and carry a spare set.
A plan for getting the deer out. Know the route back to the truck and how far it is. A buddy’s phone number helps too.
Water. Dragging a deer is hard work, even on a cold day.

Our rule is to pack the night before and lay gear out by group. Check each item off the list, then zip the pack. In the morning, you grab it and go.
